Are You A HSP?

The Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) needs a different approach when it comes to therapy. Unfortunately, HSP will rarely receive the required understanding, empathy or therapy that they need to be reached.

This may result in going through different therapists, due to not feeling comfortable to open up & be fully understood with their needs at that first point of therapy.

HSP make up around 20% of the population & many may not even be aware that they fall into this group, often thinking that there is something deeply wrong with them due to being so misunderstood by their family, friends or community around them.

Because of this they often struggle through life, feeling quite isolated & alone, thinking that they are unreachable. Below are some traits of HSP personalities.

THEY ARE DEEP PROCESSORS

HSP are deeply reflective, using information gathered from communication, transactional analysis & their heightened intuition or feelings. They often get in their own way &/or overthink, thus prolonging decision making.

HYPERSTIMULATION WITH OVER-AROUSAL

HSPs interpret stimuli & information more than the average person & are sensitive to others’ emotions, body language, tone & how they portray. When unmanaged, this level of processing can lead to high amounts of anxiety & stress, or in serious cases burnout.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY VS EMPATHY

Their emotional range is extensive, almost appearing out of control. Pain & pleasure are felt in intense ways making it challenging to understand & process thus appearing as too intense for others to be around. On the flip side, their highly sensitive personality means increased empathy towards others, however, this can result as being too helpful or destructive depending on the over-arousal level.

HIGHLY SENSORY

Being highly sensory, HSP notice what others aren't in tune with, taking in the whole picture of their environment, however, they equally can be just as uncomfortable in social settings & interactions, needing assurance, thus appearing as high maintenance. If you are an HSP, it can be a difficult challenge to express and feel like someone gets your world, however, I assure you when it happens you may find that you can begin to feel like you are less alone in this overwhelming world.
